Cleansing & cosmetology services
The ceremony begins with a ritual cleansing of the deceased’s body, symbolizing the washing away of worldly impurities.
Family members or funeral attendants may gently wipe the body using a damp cloth infused with fragrant herbs or blessed water.
This step prepares the soul for its spiritual journey and ensures purity.
Taoist Prayers and Chanting (诵经祈福)
Taoist priests (道士) conduct scripture chanting and recite incantations, inviting deities like:
Tai Yi (太乙救苦天尊) — for salvation from suffering.
Earth Deity (土地公) — for protection of the body and burial ground.
The chanting serves to guide the spirit, accumulate merits, and protect from wandering spirits.
Sealing the Coffin (封棺)
After prayers, the body is gently laid into the coffin.
A red thread or talisman may be placed across the coffin lid to ward off inauspicious energies.
The coffin is then sealed:
Some communities nail the lid while chanting prayers.
Others paste paper talismans (镇煞符) on all four corners and the center of the coffin.
Positioning the Coffin (安棺)
The coffin is positioned facing a direction based on feng shui and Taoist geomancy, ensuring auspiciousness for the deceased and family.
An altar is set in front of the coffin with offerings like:
Fruits, tea, food, joss sticks, and candles.
